Gesetzlich geschützte Qualität

The wine laws were enacted, to ensure the consumer a minimum quality. Depending on quality level, certain requirements are being demanded on the wines.

The lower most and largest group
are the ordinary table wines, above follow the local wines (elite of the table wines), on which slightly higher requirements are demanded and whose origins are settled (e.g. Pfälzer Landwein=Palatine local wine) and there above follow the quality wines. The level of quality wines can be further partitioned, like for example in Italy, the DOC wines and atop the absolute top-quality wines, the DOCG wines.

The level of the quality wines is regulated by the following parameter: authorised vine varieties and their part in the wine, hectare yields, must weight of the grapes, methods of wine making, type and duration of ageing etc. There are also requirements for a wine’s appearance, colour, smell and taste. Moreover, a chemical analysis is compulsory. I.e., as a consumer, with the purchase of quality wine, you may rely on the compliance with the regulations, enacted by the legislator. By the way, wine controllers in stores of specialised trade, supermarkets and gastronomy, examine, if all regulations, including label marking, are fulfilled.
