The country

Already the Hittites, cultivated wine in today’s Turkey around 4000 before Christ. In the early medieval times, however the Islam prevailed. Winemaking was almost completely discontinued in the following years. In the course of modernisation, Kemal Atatürk established Turkish viticulture of the 20th century.

The winegrowing

The numbers are surprising: Turkey, today disposes of a vine area of about 58.000 hectares. Though, yearly there is only 250.000 hectolitres of wine produced. The lion’s share is used for the production of table grapes and raisins. Turkish winegrowers produce since the 20ies good partly even really excellent wines – and that is at low prices.

The future

Less than a litre per year amounts the per capita consumtion in Turkey. But a rising tendency is noticeable. This on the one side is due to the fact that the religion affects the consumer behaviour less, but also to the strong investment of the entrepreneurs in the modernisation, in previous years. Turkish winegrowers are on their way, to make up technological leeway – if the trend persists, consumers may look forward to interesting wines.
