The country

For some years red wine is being cultivated, as up to now South Africa had been rather a country of white wine. By now, 40% red wines and 60% white wines are being harvested. The tendency for red wines is rising.

The winegrowing

Two factors have long slowed down the promising conditions for the winegrowing, which land and soil offer: not table wines have been requested, but the Dessert Muscatel and Sherry. And: the government cooperative for protection against low wine prices strictly regimented the cultivation. Today the country proudly presents itself under the motto: “South African wines are healthy, clean and non-polluting“ – the entire wine economy had been converted to an integrated production in the year 2000.

The future

Since the mid-eighties, the number of South African winegrowers increases strongly – a consequence of the easing of the government regimentation. In trying to produce wines of higher quality, the winegrowers find their way into cooler regions. With self-confident ambition, plantations and companies are being renewed, fresh pioneering spirit is noticeable. The success is already present: the wines from the cape are steadily improving and: they are very low priced.
