The country

Romania looks back on a long winegrowing tradition. Already at the time of the Romans the Romanian viticulture rejoiced in a very good reputation. Time and again, there came impulses from outside: in the 12th century, it were the German emigrants, who settled down in Siebenbürgen (Transsillvania), in the 18th century the Swabians, who moved to Banat. They significantly contributed to the development of viticulture.

The winegrowing

The country’s large palette of wines is due to the convenient climate and soil conditions. Beside good table wines there are high-quality wines and famous sweet and dessert wines produced. The dessert wine Cotnari is considered today’s still considered one of the noblest white wine varieties of Romania.

The future

The cultivation areas amount to about 250.000 hectares, yearly eight to nine million hectolitres of wine are produced. Romania belongs to the ten largest wine exporters in the world. The Romanian viticulture is in national hands, however, the national research institutions for viticulture and winery and its numerous experimental stations strongly contribute to the improvement of the quality.
