The country

Portugal is of all winegrowing countries the one with the longest tradition. Possibly, there was wine cultivated here, already in the pre-Roman times. Nevertheless, the level of awareness of Portuguese wines rather small. For sure, Port wine and Madeira are world-famous and with its Mateus, Portugal owns a bestseller. Anyway: the ample diversity of Portuguese wines, their fruit and vitality deserve it, to be taken more note of, as they are of outstanding quality.

The winegrowing

Portugal diposes of an abundance of domestic vine varieties. And these own grape varieties are mainly being cultivated. The result: a great diversity of interesting white and red high-quality wines. By a vine area of almost 400.000 hectare and a production amount of about 10 million hectolitres wine per year, Portugal ranks on the seventh position of the winemaking countries. The per capita consumption is remarkable: about two-third of their wine, the Portuguese drinks themselves.

The future

Basically, the Portuguese winegrowers are accustomed to traditional quality wine cultivation. But here also the time did not stand still: winegrowing and cellar care were purposefully improved. Today, one million hectolitres of wine are exported. Tendency, due to their excellent quality: rising!
