The country

Worldwide, the Iberic peninsula holds the largest vine area. As far as yield is concerned, Spain however only ranks on the third place. Reasons for that are the extensive drought and the fruitless soils. Internationally known, up to now are still mainly the Spanish Sherry and of course the Rioja. Though, Spanish winegrowers meanwhile produce remarkable white wines and outstanding red wins.

The winegrowing

Considering the country roughly, three zones may be distinguished: in the climatic moderate north the best white and red wines are produced. From the hot, dry middle of the country originate heavy, very alcoholic wines, whereas the sunny South is famous for its liqueur wines, in particular Sherry.

The future

The process of modernisation of the Spanish viticulture proceeds rapidly and is not yet completed. But already today, the quality conscious winegrowers produce remarkable wines, also for the sophisticated daily enjoyment. With an export amount of about six million hectolitre wine per year, Spain is well on its way to acquiring an excellent reputation worldwide.
