The country

The German wine is light and full of content - in its way and manifoldness arguably unique. The climatic conditions are not really unproblematic, as in a cool year; the grapes reach the maturity only by great effort. The cultivation areas are mostly situated in the West and in the South at the Rhine and its tributaries. The region around Saxony, up to now, plays a trivial role.

The winegrowing

Traditionally, Germany is well known for exquisite white wines. However, the German viticulture suffers from the image of the cheap, thin and sweet mass productions, often wrongly, as in some regions, high-quality wines with best reputation are being cultivated. In the first place, are the excellent Rieslings as well as some Late Burgundian varieties.

The future

Generally, most German winegrowers are waiting for better times to come. Many wines only possess regional acceptance, some premium wines are only popular with connoisseurs. In hardly any other country, the competition is such big: the manifold and high-value offer of wines from the great winegrowing nations as well as the exots from overseas´, is steadily rising. Though the wine market is booming, German products - not only with younger consumers - are left with nothing are.
