The country

In the heart of the Balkan peninsula, Bulgaria is situated. Several mountains cross the country. In the upcountry, there reigns a continental climate with hot summers and cold winters. A Mediterranean climate dominates in direction to the Black Sea. This country offers best conditions for winegrowing. As an economical factor – and currency bringer – the wine economy is indispensable for Bulgaria.

The winegrowing

Winegrowing has a long tradition in Bulgaria: archaeological findings show an origin already in the antiquity. Today, an area of 150.000 hectares is planted with vines. Domestic varieties like Kadarka and Mavrud but also foreign vine varieties like Cabernet, Merlot and Chardonnay, thrive here. Small winegrowers, who produce in a traditional way, farm almost one-third of the vine area.

The future

Bulgaria has conquered his position among the world’s leading wine exporting countries. Of the yearly produced four to five million hectolitres of wine, three million are exported to more than 70 countries. Bulgaria’s wine industry today presents itself in modern way: quality dry and semi–dry white and red wines are produced as well as dessert wines to a low price.
