The country

For a long time, the Australian continent was considered to be unsuitable for viticulture due to its soil and climate. In fact, not until the 19th century, immigrants brought along seedlings, which prospered and grew to best maturity. The spreading of the vine - like the settlement of Australia - ran from East to West.

The winegrowing

Today the Australian winegrowers possess an enormous richness in varieties – a merit of the immigrants from almost all European countries. Australia’s climatic diversity and above all the intensive sun irradiation imparts intensity and strength to the wines, though the winegrowers hardly do without irrigation.

The future

Today, on acreage of 60.000 hectares, yearly 4 to 5 million hectolitres wine are produced. Its modern and international competitive wine economy is growing: the manifold wines from Australia convince by excellent qualities and self-contained character.
